Ben Jeffery

Ben Jeffery is a contemporary painter whose work combines strong technical control with an instinctive, evolving approach to composition.

Born in 1986 and raised in North London, his early interest in art was shaped by exposure to traditional British landscape painting, alongside a natural ability for drawing and portraiture. He went on to study art to degree level, developing his practice largely through self-direction and experimentation rather than formal technique.

Working primarily in oils, Jeffery has built his style through trial and refinement. His process is hands-on and responsive. He often begins with a loose composition, allowing the painting to develop as he works, with colour and form emerging in stages. Typically, he builds his pieces in layers, starting with a full base and then adding detail once the surface has settled.

His work spans portraiture and landscape, unified by a confident use of colour and a focus on mark-making. There is a balance between structure and spontaneity, with each piece evolving through the process rather than being fully predetermined.

Influences come from both traditional and contemporary sources. Natural landscapes, particularly from the British countryside and coastal settings, play a strong role, alongside inspiration drawn from film, digital art and visual effects.

The result is a body of work that feels modern, expressive and visually engaging, with a clear sense of depth, colour and movement.
