Ben Payne – Contemporary British Coastal Artist

Ben is a contemporary painter with over two decades of professional experience, known for his atmospheric coastal and landscape work.

Before committing fully to art, he worked as a behavioural therapist specialising in autism. Although he valued the role, painting remained his clear focus. Largely self-taught, he developed his skills through discipline and repetition, supported early on by guidance from his mother, an accomplished artist.

His work is rooted in the British coastline. The sea and open sky remain central themes, offering a sense of space and escapism that runs through his paintings. While grounded in real environments, his approach leans towards imagined realism, refining each scene to capture an idealised moment.

A key part of his development came through producing a large body of small studies over several years. This process sharpened his technique and built an international collector base, with works now held across more than 20 countries.

He works from his studio on the south coast, continuing to travel for new references and ideas. His paintings are calm, immersive and designed to bring a sense of space and light into the home.
