The Real Hackney Dave
The Real Hackney Dave
Bold Statements, British Humour and Art That Gets People Talking
Dave Buonaguidi, better known as The Real Hackney Dave, is a contemporary British artist whose bold, witty and sometimes provocative artwork is designed to make you stop, smile and think.
Combining the visual impact of Pop Art with the clever language of advertising, Dave creates statement pieces that are packed with personality. His artwork often features humorous, uplifting or deliberately cheeky messages, transforming everyday words into something memorable.
What makes Dave's work particularly interesting is his choice of materials. Rather than starting with a blank canvas, he frequently uses vintage maps, old photographs and other found objects as the foundation for his artwork. He then hand screen prints his distinctive messages over them, sometimes introducing glitter, gold leaf and other unexpected materials.
The result is a wonderful contrast between old and new, traditional and contemporary. Each piece has its own character, with the history of the original material adding another dimension to the finished artwork.
Born and raised in London, Dave studied art before building a successful career in advertising, establishing several agencies along the way. His experience in the industry helped shape his artistic approach, teaching him how powerful the combination of a few carefully chosen words and a striking image can be.
Influenced by Pop Art, vintage propaganda and artists such as Jamie Reid, Dave has developed a style that is instantly recognisable. His work draws inspiration from everyday life, relationships, politics, popular culture and the emotions we all share.
His artwork has been exhibited at venues including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Imperial War Museum and Trento Museum of Modern Art, while his collectors reportedly include Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Kate Moss and Henry Golding.
Beyond the humour, Dave also believes art can make a positive difference. He has supported charitable causes including NHS fundraising, humanitarian support for Ukraine and London community initiatives.
His personal philosophy sums up his approach beautifully:
"Be happy, be generous, make happy."
