Tom Butler
Tom Butler is a highly distinctive contemporary artist whose striking mixed-media collages transform everyday materials into vibrant and imaginative works of art. Using everything from vintage maps and newspapers to sheet music, typography and old book pages, Tom carefully constructs detailed cityscapes, coastal scenes and architectural landmarks filled with texture, character and humour.
His creative approach invites viewers to look closer, revealing clever visual details hidden within every composition. In Tom’s hands, a fragment of a crossword puzzle may become the windows of a city apartment block, while faded typography or vintage advertisements are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the scene itself. The result is artwork that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.
Travel has played a major role in shaping Tom’s artistic style and inspiration. A visit to the historic French town of Uzès first sparked his fascination with colour, texture and typography. The weathered stone buildings, faded painted advertisements and sunlit streets left a lasting impression and ignited his love of incorporating text and graphic elements into his work. Since then, destinations including Paris, New York, Havana, Venice and the Cornish coastline have all influenced his evolving collection.
Tom graduated with a First Class Honours degree in General Illustration and draws inspiration from a wide range of artistic movements and creators. From the light and colour of the Impressionists including Monet and Cézanne, to the expressive work of Kandinsky, Norman Rockwell and iconic typographer A.M. Cassandre, his influences are both diverse and deeply rooted in visual storytelling.
Now celebrated for his instantly recognisable style, Tom Butler’s artwork has become highly collectable across the UK and beyond. His energetic compositions, layered detail and playful originality make every piece a true conversation starter and a standout addition to any contemporary art collection.
